Course Assessment Students will complete a variety of flexible assessments.  Individuals currently working in a relevant field will have the opportunity to develop and present  professional development manuals and projects based on an actual population health or health promotion projects.

Note: a significant component of the Diploma of Population Health qualification focuses on effective written communications.  An competent level of English literacy will be required to successfully complete this qualification, particularly in the form of formal written reports.   

 

Public/Population Health is emerging as a key area of health.  It is involved with both fixing and preventing health problems by focusing on  groups rather than individual clinical cases.  Population Health is unique as it combines social, behavioural, environmental, nutritional and health sciences to promote health for the entire community.  Job growth in this area is predicted to soar over the next four years (Sydney Morning Herald, January 19-20 2008, p.42).      

The Diploma of Population Health is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and professional attributes to work in a range of population health projects and programs.  It is a unique blend of population health and practical study of current health, activity and nutrition guidelines, projects and policies.   

The Diploma of Population Health will allow learners to develop, tailor, communicate and promote relevant state, Australian  and global health, nutrition and physical activity reports and guidelines for client groups and communities.  This course is suitable for individuals who wish to develop their knowledge of health and nutrition within a public health framework.  

Skills covered in the course include:

  • Comprehensive study of nutritional principles and latest population health research 

  • Using key public health, health promotion, education and social marketing principles to communicate and encourage health-promoting behaviours via a range of communication channels including meetings, seminars, newsletters and online media.

  • Training, coaching and motivating groups and workplaces on healthy lifestyle choices.   

  • Providing guest talks on healthy eating and healthy lifestyle issues.

  • Applying population health principles to evoke long-term, community-based change 

  • Incorporating and implementing existing government and community public health initiatives for your target group.     

  • Project management and evaluation techniques.

  • Conducting nutrition and healthy lifestyle reviews, action plans, curriculum, policy and staff training in accordance with recognised health, dietary and activity guidelines.     

  • Partnering with community and private enterprise to source funding, expertise and facilities to promote healthy communities

  • Research and work skills to source and keep up to date with the latest health and nutrition research and practices.

The Diploma of Population Health is a nationally recognised qualification covering skills required for a range of population health projects/programs.  Occupational titles for these workers may include: Health Promotion Officer, Schools Program Officer, Health Sponsorship Coordinator, Health Promotion Project Officer, Health Liaison Worker, Community Health Educator, Area Health Education Officer.  This qualification is suitable for entry into population health work or as an additional qualification to those with existing specialist/clinical health qualifications.
