This article published in the May issue of the Medical Journal of Australia provides a snapshot of the health and well-being of Australia's kids.    

 

French Women do get fat

It seems Mireille Guiliano's world bestseller hasn't told the whole story.  This article, published in this Saturday's Sydney Morning Herald argues that for a nation of fabulously slim healthy women the French still have body image issues of their own.  

 

Breasts a treasure chest worth $2.2bn 

Mothers of Australia stand proud, your breasts are worth $2.2 billion a year.  A study of breastfeeding by NSW Health says mothers should be counted as food producers and recommends breast pumps be GST-free, putting women in the same category as farmers.

 

Parents unaware of their children's weight status 

Many parents have difficulty recognising overweight and obesity in their young children.  A UK study of parents of 3-5 year olds found that many parents showed poor awareness of their child's current weight status.

 

Life expectancy to drop for first time in 1000 years

Australians could be eating themselves to an early death, with new research suggesting life expectancy will decline for the first time in 1000 years due to the obesity epidemic.  A paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine predicts a decrease in life expectancy.
